An IP address is your device's unique network identifier on the internet. Every website you connect to sees your approximate region and ISP through it, and ad networks use it for tracking. Knowing your IP helps when setting up access, troubleshooting your network and checking how anonymous you really are online.
Even without signing in, your browser automatically shares a surprising amount of data. Together it forms a "digital fingerprint" that can single you out from other visitors — even without cookies and in incognito mode.
Open the "Look up a domain or IP" tab and enter a site address such as example.com. The tool runs a DNS query, shows the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, the country and hosting provider from the geolocation database, and the reverse DNS (PTR) record, then sends one HTTPS request to check whether the web server responds and which software it runs. It's a quick way to find out who hosts a site or to confirm that DNS already points to a new server.
WebRTC powers video calls and data transfer directly in the browser. While setting up a connection it can expose your local — and sometimes your real public — IP address, bypassing your VPN.
